Description

“Amphitrite is a female deity in ancient Greek mythology. She was the goddess of the sea and the wife of Poseidon, who fell in love with her after seeing her dancing and singing with her sisters. Initially, she refused to marry him, but he sent a dolphin to convince her, and Amphitrite changed her mind. As a reward for the dolphin’s help, Poseidon placed its image in the sky, creating the constellation Delphinus. Her equivalent in Roman mythology was Salacia, the goddess of saltwater. While she may not be widely known today, in ancient times, she was very popular. Before being described in Homer’s epics, she was well-known in the northern regions of Africa and the Capsian culture.

According to Hesiod’s Theogony, her father was Nereus, and her mother was Doris, but according to the Bibliotheca, she is a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys. She had 50 (or 100) sisters.”
